Dodge
Two brothers, Horace
and John Dodge, began Dodge Brothers car company in 1914 after
having manufactured engines for Ford. Their initial car soon
earned a reputation for ruggedness and Dodge vehicles were used
as staff vehicles and ambulances in World War I. In 1928,
Chrysler purchased Dodge and the company slowly evolved into the
division responsible for trucks and performance-oriented cars.
Like other American auto manufacturers, Dodge's fortunes started
to slip in the '70s due to changing tastes and increased
competition. A full recovery didn't start until the early '90s
when the company wowed the public with the Viper and an all-new
Ram. Today, Dodge is a division of DaimlerChrysler, a result of
the merger of the German company Daimler (owner of
Mercedes-Benz) and Chrysler.
Automotive consumers interested in buying a domestic vehicle
that's a bit different than the norm should take a look at what
Dodge has to offer. In recent years, the company has designed
many of its vehicles to have aggressive styling and
above-average performance. An obvious example is the full-size
Dodge Ram, one of several reputable Dodge trucks. It's easily
identifiable by its visually striking "big-rig" front end and it
features a wide selection of powerful engines. It also possesses
sharp handling and very high towing and hauling capabilities.
For those not needing a full-size truck, Dodge has the midsize
Dakota. The Dakota is all-new for 2005 and boasts a more rugged
frame and three excellent engine options. Dodge also sells the
Durango, a spacious midsize SUV, and the versatile Caravan and
Grand Caravan minivans.
If you're looking for a Dodge car, your choices include the Neon
sedan, the larger Stratus coupe or sedan, the Magnum wagon and
the exotic Viper. The Neon and the Stratus are both older
designs and don't particularly stand out in their respective
classes, although the special Neon SRT-4 is one of the best
performing cars available for under $25,000. Additional
excitement comes in the form of the new Dodge Magnum. Though
Americans have traditionally viewed wagons as a bit stodgy, the
Magnum gets heads to turn thanks to its bold styling, rear-drive
layout and available V8 engine. Of course, for maximum fun, one
can't forget the Viper, Dodge's 500-horsepower exotic sports
car.
