Jaguar
In 1922, Brits Bill
Lyons and William Walmsley teamed up to form the Swallow Sidecar
Company, building these motorcycle add-ons until they introduced
the SS100 Jaguar sports car in 1935. After World War II, the
company was reorganized and renamed Jaguar Cars Ltd.,
specializing in premier sports and racing cars such as the
XK120, XK140 and D-Type. Luxurious yet sporting Jaguar sedans,
such as the Mark VII, soon followed. Merging with the British
Motor Corporation in 1966, Jaguar's reputation suffered from
poor quality, and sales slipped, in spite of the beautiful XKE
that was introduced in 1961. After Ford bought Jaguar in 1989,
the marque's quality and popularity rose, and Jaguar cars are
now desired for their distinctive styling, sporting performance
and luxurious interiors.
Jaguar cars have a long history of elegant styling and sporting
performance. Today's Jaguar dealers still offer vehicles with
those traits. The Jaguar lineup for 2006 consists of four
models, the compact X-Type, midsize S-Type, flagship XJ-Series
and sporting XK-Series. The X-Type competes against the likes of
the BMW 3 Series and Audi A4 and offers standard all-wheel
drive. Power for the X-Type sedan and wagon is supplied by a
3.0-liter V6 rated for 227 hp and 206 lb-ft of torque. The
S-Type, which has styling that's reminiscent of classic Jaguar
sedans of the 1960s, offers a choice of three engines.
The S-Type 3.0 comes with a 3.0-liter, 235-horsepower V6; the
S-Type 4.2 has a 4.2-liter, 294-hp V8; and the
pavement-scorching S-Type R boasts a supercharged version of the
4.2 under its bonnet, worth 390 hp. The elegant XJ-Series sedan
comes in two wheelbases (119.4 inches and 124.4), five trim
levels (XJ8, XJ8 L, Vanden Plas, Super V8 and XJ-R) and with
either of two 4.2-liter V8 engines, a naturally aspirated
version with 294 hp, and a supercharged version worth 390 hp.
The XK-Series sports car can be had in coupe and convertible
styles and has either the 294-hp, 4.2-liter V8 (XK8) or the
supercharged 4.2 with 390 hp.
